Renault Subscription: A More Attractive and Flexible Alternative to Car Leasing in Malaysia

Move over rentals and car leasing in Malaysia! Now, there’s a more attractive and flexible solution for those wishing to drive two of the best continental SUVs as well the most iconic sports vehicle in the market.

And, it’s available from as low as RM43 per day!

Say hello to ‘Renault Subscription’ – the first of its kind in Malaysia. Before this, if you wanted to drive a car, the options available were either 1) buying a new or used vehicle or 2) leasing or renting a car.

However, in an increasingly challenging economic landscape, we’re all having to contend with rising living costs, mounting time constraints from the hubbub of daily life, higher interest rates, tougher approvals for car loans and rapidly depreciating value in a marketplace that is becoming more and more competitive. Long term car lease options are often not competitively structured.

‘Renault Subscription’ aims to help alleviate some of your day-to-day stress by providing a new hassle-free mobility solution that just might be easier on your purse strings.

At the same time, it also offers even more flexibility and options to enjoy freedom in a Renault vehicle that exudes contemporary French design with exceptional road handling and Continental quality and standards.

Essentially, you “own” the car for the duration of your subscribed plan but it’s fulfilled on a mobility-as-a-service platform.

Here, we’ll take a look at the differences between this new age car ownership model vs. buying a brand-new vehicle and car leasing in Malaysia.

‘Renault Subscription’: What will you enjoy?

Offering freedom and flexibility, ‘Renault Subscription’ allows customers to break away from long-term loan tenures, rigid lock-ins and concerns about vehicle depreciation costs for as low as RM43 per day.

Currently, it’s available for both core Renault SUV models - the versatile Renault CAPTUR lifestyle crossover and the premium flagship Renault KOLEOS D-segment SUV. On top of that, you can now also subscribe for the hottest hatch in the market, Renault MEGANE R.S. CUP 280.

It functions just like any other subscription plans you have signed up for where you pay a monthly fee for enjoying the services on offer. Think Netflix, high-speed broadband, mobile plans and the like.

In the case of ‘Renault Subscription’, you get a choice of two plans – FIXED and SWITCH – each with alternative options for choices to suit your lifestyle needs.

Here’s a comparison of both plans and the benefits you’ll enjoy:

SWITCH PLAN (Total flexibility, with access to Renault family models):

*Renault Family Access - Base plan: 2 months Renault Family access including 2 weeks of Megane R.S. Prime plan: 4 months Renault Family access including 1 month of Megane R.S. Subject to availability. Terms and conditions apply.

Renault Subscription vs buying:

So, what are the advantages of ‘Renault Subscription’ versus a buying?

And with the SWITCH Plan, swapping cars is even easier as you can choose to drive different models within the duration of your subscribed plan.

But I fully own the car when I buy instead of subscribing. Do you really?

Unless you are rolling in plenty of excess dough and can pay up the full price at the point of purchase, buying a car typically requires a car loan.

And there’s a reason why a car loan is also known as a hire purchase (H-P) loan. The term “hire purchase” means that the car technically still belongs to the lender (usually banks) and you’re seen as “hiring” the car from the lender. Only after you complete your loan repayment then the ownership of the car is transferred to you

Renault Subscription vs car leasing:

As a first in the market, the closest comparison for the Renault Subscription would have to be traditional leasing.

As with subscription, leasing works on a monthly fee basis and there is also no down payment.

However, there are some key differences between both models

1. More competitive rates. Across the board, Renault Subscription rates are more attractive compared to those offered by leasing companies.

For example, the average fee to lease a B-segment car is approximately RM1,800 per month. And that’s for a non-Continental vehicle.

By contrast, through Renault Subscription, the Captur crossover SUV – a French model with Continental quality and standards – is available from as low as RM1,299 per month.

The Koleos from RM2,299, making it a lot more attractive than the best SUV lease deals available currently.

You can now also subscribe to the hottest sport hatch, the Megnage R.S. 280 CUP from RM3,999 per month.

And considering Renault Subscription also comes with all-inclusive costs that are not covered by leasing companies, you’ll enjoy more cost savings and enhanced peace-of-mind.

2. All-inclusive fees. As mentioned before, with Renault Subscription, you pay a flat all-in monthly fee, which covers servicing, road tax and insurance and for SWITCH customers, wear and tear as well.

With leasing, not all companies offer add-ons and you may need to account for such additional costs. Leasing companies are also known to charge excessive wear and tear fees even for the smallest dings and scratches.

3. More flexibility to swap models. Long-term car leasing contracts tend to come with strict and restrictive terms and conditions. Once you’ve signed the contract for a particular model, swapping to a different model partway through the contract would likely be impossible or incur a hefty penalty.

With Renault Subscription’s SWITCH plan you can get 2 months access to the Renault Koleos and Megane R.S. on the BASE plan option for a monthly cost from RM1,999. If you want to experience the Koleos and Megane R.S. for a longer period, there’s the Prime option with 4-months access that costs RM2,199/month.

4. Enjoy no lock-in and penalty-free options. With long-term leasing, you are stuck with the contract you first signed. If your needs suddenly change, typically, you can’t change the terms nor terminate the contract without being charged a penalty that can be quite costly.

In comparison, if you choose the SWITCH Plan with Renault Subscription, you not only get to swap vehicles depending on your needs, you can also terminate your subscription at no extra cost.

5. New vehicles and the latest models. When you sign on for Renault Subscription, you are guaranteed to have a brand-new car or one that is less than one (1) year old. And you know exactly which model you’ll be getting at the start of the process.

When you lease, you do not necessarily get to pick the model of your choice. They may not offer it, or they may be leased out. You may also get a car that is more than a couple years old, which means there is more wear and tear and let’s face it, just plain less fancy.

So, there you have it. The key benefits of Renault Subscription vs car leasing or buying a car.

If, after all this, you still want to fulfil your dream of buying a top-quality Continental SUV, we’ve got you covered with the Renault Captur lifestyle crossover. It’s called Renault Honour and it offers guaranteed future value up to your 4th year of ownership to help ease your concerns about depreciation costs in the first few years where the gap is biggest.
